'I've worked here for 25 years... watch me tank the company': Boss dangles 'firing' over veteran employee who left 19-hour shift 3 minutes early, veteran leads rest of employees down path of compliance, leading to boss getting fired

One boss had to lie in the bed he made when he yapped at the wrong employee for leaving a shift just three minutes early. I would like to see the expression on his face when he looks in the mirror and has to answer the question that will hopefully bug him forever more… Was it worth it?

Before I get ahead of myself, I ought to start at the beginning. The OP, u/irritatingfarquar, was working at a water company for a whopping 25 years, when new management came into the picture. OP was good at his job, and one of the most productive employees in the entire company, but this new manager was on a power trip, and nobody was going to stop him. One day, OP finished a 19-hour shift a couple of minutes early. He was covered in mud and sweat, and extremely tired.

His boss noticed that on the vehicle tracker, it stated that OP had left three minutes early, so he called OP into his office, gave him a right shouting at, and told him that he could be fired for such a thing. This manager's exact words were, 'You were trying to defraud the company'.

Livid, OP decided that from then on, he would be extremely strict about company guidelines. No more coming in half an hour early. In fact, no more deviation from shifts whatsoever. Well, upper management did not like that, as it was costing them buckets of money. Moreover, the other employees were following OP's lead… it was a storm, alright.

Little did I realise at the time but the guys job was bonus related and linked to our productivity, which tanked after that because all the other gangs followed my lead, except the brown nose gangs obviously.

    Font - Little did he know that I'd actually trained his boss when he first started with the company 15 years before and wanted to come out and find out what we do and experience how hard the job is, he surprised me by working a full month on the repair crews before going back to the office. Anyhow the boss calls me in to find out what is really going on, so I explained how he'd used the tracker to monitor what time I'd left the yard

    Font - and that I'd guesstimated my finish time and over estimated by 3 minutes because I was absolutely knackered after working a shift from hell on-call . Conclusion, manager was let go for misuse of the tracking system, as it's only supposed to be used for emergencies and not monitoring and we had our on-call system reviewed to cut the hours we were having to work.

    Font - the on-call crew to come finish off almost on a daily basis, most of the guys liked the overtime payments anyway, so they weren't bothered by it and I always gave them a heads up that they were getting the call to come across and complete the work.
